Taste and texture
Ttungba latte is a sweet drink made by combining banana-flavored milk and coffee. Banana aroma and roasted coffee meet in a milk base, giving it a different center of flavor from an Americano diluted with water. The basic version described here uses banana milk without blending fresh fruit. It can be prepared with a cup and spoon, making it an approachable home-café drink without a coffee machine.
There are different ways to add the coffee. Dissolving instant black coffee in a little water first helps distribute it evenly through the milk. Espresso is another option, but dissolving instant coffee does not turn it into espresso. The coffee used changes the roasted aroma and bitterness.
In an iced version, the ice is also part of the recipe. Easy Recipe Room freezes banana milk into cubes, then adds liquid banana milk and coffee. This replaces ordinary ice with frozen milk. As those cubes melt, they add banana milk, producing a different balance from melting water ice.
Versions containing fresh banana can also be distinguished. The 10000 Recipe editorial version adds small banana pieces to milk and coffee. Superpower blends banana with milk before adding espresso. One gives you pieces of fruit to eat in the drink; the other disperses pulp through the milk, creating a thicker consistency.
Some drinks called banana latte contain no coffee. Kyles combines banana powder with warmed milk; its smoothie blends milk, powder and ice. Coffee-forward ttungba latte, a drink blended with fruit pulp, and coffee-free banana milk offer different flavors and textures. Check both how the banana flavor is created and whether coffee is included.
The basic drink layers coffee bitterness over sweetness and smooth milk. Familiar banana-milk aroma remains, with roasted coffee notes after swallowing. A small amount of coffee keeps it closer to a sweet milk drink; more coffee in the same amount of milk makes coffee more prominent. Consider your preferred sweetness separately from how much coffee aroma you want.
Condensed milk or honey changes the drink differently from coffee. More coffee can increase bitterness, while condensed milk adds dairy flavor and sweetness. Some fresh-banana versions use honey. Checking for added sweeteners helps if you enjoy banana aroma but prefer a less sweet drink.
Coffee and milk may appear in separate layers before drinking. Without stirring, the flavor depends on which layer reaches your mouth first. For an even mixture, gently stir down to the bottom of the cup. Banana pieces may move through the drink, but stirring does not break them down as a blender would.
The basic version without added fruit has no pieces to chew. Added banana gives soft bites of pulp, while a smoothie blended with ice has small ice particles and a thicker consistency. Although all can be cold and sweet, they drink differently. Decide whether you want a smooth latte or a thick drink that can be eaten with a spoon.
When it may suit the table
- It suits a day when you enjoy banana milk and also want roasted coffee aroma. At home, dissolve a little instant black coffee, mix it in and taste before adjusting. The basic version is a convenient starting point without preparing fruit.
When another path may fit better
- If you do not want coffee, choose banana milk on its own or a coffee-free banana latte. A version with banana pieces may suit you better when you want fruit to chew. Check for coffee and fruit pulp even when the names sound similar.
How to order it in Korea
- Check which banana milk and coffee are used, and whether a sweetener such as condensed milk is added. This drink contains coffee, so do not mistake the name for plain banana milk. Coffee type and amount change its strength when making it yourself too.
