Varies by restaurantFast-food chains often use processed cheese, though cheddar, Swiss or mozzarella also appear, and toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles, plus sauces like ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise, differ by shop. For dietary restrictions or allergies, ask the restaurant whether the food contains your trigger ingredients.
Taste and texture
A cheeseburger set combines a beef-and-cheese burger with a side and a drink.
The patty is ground beef shaped into a round layer and cooked, rather than separate meat slices stacked in a sandwich. How firmly the mince is packed and how thickly it is formed affect its bite. Fattier and leaner mince also differ in juiciness, so diameter alone says little about texture.
A smash burger presses mince thin directly onto a hot pan. Its broad contact surface browns, and thin edges become crisp. Compared with a thicker patty, more of each bite consists of seared exterior. Smash describes the patty method rather than the cheese or sauce, so the same cheese can sit on distinctly different textures.
Buns hold the filling while adding sweetness and crumb. One version uses flour, water, yeast, butter, egg and sugar, rising before and after shaping. The soft bread may have sesame seeds or a butter glaze. Its yielding bite differs from hard-crusted bread when eaten together with meat and cheese.
Toasting only the cut faces leaves the rounded outside soft while lightly firming and browning the inside. Those inner faces meet sauce and juices. A layered burger therefore combines toasted surface and fluffy crumb, with yielding bread leading into the patty and vegetables.
A double stacks two patties without necessarily doubling every component. More meat between the same upper and lower buns changes the bread-to-meat ratio. Cheese may sit between patties, with slice count varying. One thick patty and several thin ones also distribute seared surfaces differently even at a similar total height.
Cheese adds a salty, soft layer to the cooked meat patty inside the bun. Toppings such as lettuce, tomato or pickles can add crunch or acidity. A set with fries adds a crisp side with a different texture from the burger.
Cheese can melt along the warm patty's contours. American-style slices, cheddar or Swiss provide different versions of the salty, smooth layer over the beef. The name cheeseburger does not promise long cheese strands; melt and spread depend on the cheese and its condition.
Raw toppings add moisture and bite among warm ingredients. Shredded lettuce supplies layers of leaf, tomato yields juice, raw onion brings sharpness and pickles add acidity. Leaves, flesh and pickled pieces each perform a different role rather than being interchangeable vegetable toppings.
Ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise bring tomato sweetness and acidity, mustard aroma and a creamy texture respectively. Mixed sauces combine those qualities in one layer. Areas with more sauce can moisten the bun differently, so the centre and edges of one burger need not feel equally moist.
Fries add a crisp surface beside the soft bun. A method that cooks cut potato and fries it twice separates fluffy centres from crisp exteriors. Thicker batons contain proportionally more interior, thinner ones more noticeable surface. That thickness changes the textural contrast of the whole set.
When it may suit the table
- You want a fast, filling meal
- You want a main, a side and a drink in one order
When another path may fit better
- You need to avoid cheese or dairy
- A fried side feels too heavy today
How to order it in Korea
- A single item means the burger; a set adds a side and drink. Decide whether you want fries and a drink, then check each portion size. The amount of food can change with the side and drink choices even under the same set name.
- Ask whether you can add or leave out toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles, or sauces like ketchup and mustard.
At the restaurant
- If changing the side or drink, check the available choices and any extra charge.
